Catholics Celebrating Creation: Earth Day Parish Resource, 2010

Catholics Celebrating CreationSince 1970, the celebration of Earth Day each April has maintained its original focus on peace, justice and care of the Earth. These themes are clearly part of our Catholic mission.

As Pope Benedict XVI said in his January 2010 message, If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation:

…creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God’s works and its preservation has now become essential…. It is imperative that mankind renew and strengthen ‘that covenant between human beings and the environment, which should mirror the creative love of God, from whom we come and towards whom we are journeying.'

In this season of rejoicing in the new life of the Resurrection and of spring, we invite you to celebrate and give thanks for the environment on which we depend for life. Our hope is that a focused liturgical theme during this season, along with other information and resources, will reinforce actions that parishes are already taking to celebrate and care for creation, and will inspire them to do more.
