Leadership Development Series

Leadership, Team, Success

Background and Information

Through its Parish Social Ministry program, the Office for Catholic Social Justice works to prepare parishes and their leaders to make social ministry an organized and integral part of parish life.

The Leadership Development Series is a NEW initiative of OCSJM, designed to support the growth and development of social ministry leaders, so that a parish’s social mission does not rest solely on the shoulders of one or two individuals. Training focuses on practical tools for leadership, to encourage parishioners to develop and grow parish social ministry efforts which fully realize the U.S.Bishops’ vision for the integration of the Church’s social mission throughout all of parish life.

The workshops, based on the Communities of Salt and Light document of the USCCB, are designed to support the efforts of any and all members of the parish community who have the interest and the desire to make social ministry come alive in their parish. Individuals who complete all seven workshops will receive a certificate of attendance.

It is helpful for participants to familiarize themselves with the Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on the Social Mission of the Parish document.

No, the workshops are free and open to all, but advanced registration is requested to help us plan accordingly.

What if I don’t see a workshop in my area?

If it is not possible for you to travel to another location, you can work with Lynn to host a workshop in your parish. Contact Lynn at 203-777-7279 or lcampbell@catholicsocialjustice.org.

What is involved in hosting a workshop?

Hosting a workshop means that you provide the space. If it is possible to provide tea, decaf coffee and cookies/fruit, that is welcome but not required.

The space needs to be suitable for a group of about 30 adults and it should be possible to have heat if it is a cold night. It is helpful if the space is accessible for people with mobility issues.

There should be sufficient parking located near the meeting room. It is also helpful if a designated person from the parish can be responsible for inviting people within the parish to attend the workshop.

Will the workshops be offered again in 2012?

Yes, they will be offered in locations different from 2011.

Who should participate?

The workshops are designed for anyone interested in enhancing an existing parish social ministry program or developing a new parish social ministry effort.

Members of social ministry, evangelization, stewardship, and faith formation committees, parish council members, deacons and pastoral associates are encouraged to participate.
