Parish Social Ministry

What is Parish Social Ministry?

Parish Social Ministry educates parishioners about Catholic Social Teaching and engages them in the mission of the church.

The parish is where the Church lives. Parishes are communities of faith, of action, and of hope. They are where the gospel is proclaimed and celebrated, where believers are formed and sent to renew the earth. ...More and more, the social justice dimensions of our faith are moving from the fringes of parishes to become an integral part of local Catholic life.
Communities of Salt and Light, 1993

How can the OCSJM be of service?

We offer assistance to pastors, parish leaders, and parishioners as they engage in the work of parish social ministry. We provide workshops, resources and consultation on current issues such as environmental justice, immigration, peace, global solidarity, poverty and advocacy.
Bishop Peter Rosazza explains the importance of Parish Social Ministry
in this video introduction to the
Communities of Salt and Light.

Building Your Parish Social Ministry

For parishes that already have a social ministry committee and want to build on existing efforts, the OCSJM can provide training to move your ministry forward, focusing on the four dimensions of social ministry: advocacy, empowerment, education, and service.

Contact the office for more information or to schedule a workshop.
