St. Francis: Protect Life by Caring for Creation, Parish Resource 2010

line drawing of baby cradled in handsOn the first weekend of October, Respect Life Sunday usually coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. This moment invites us to a deeper understanding of the connections between protecting life and caring for our environment, God’s creation.

The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi is an opportunity to give thanks for God’s creation and to examine our stewardship of the environment in light of Church teaching. As we honor St. Francis and some parishes bless the animals that share our lives, we are called to understand the moral dimensions of caring for God’s creation.

New threats to life call for new responses in faith. We cannot protect the poor and the most vulnerable, including children in the womb, their first environment, unless we protect the environment we share and upon which we depend.
