Helpful Books

A New Way to be Church, Parish Renewal from the Outside In by Jack Jezreel (link to purchase here)
Leavened throughout by reflections on scripture and the author’s own experience of family, parish ministry, service, and work for social justice, the book concludes with a practical guide for implementing these principles in your own parish.

Parish Social Ministry: Strategies for Success by Tom Ullrich  (Ave Maria Press, 2001).
Meeting the social needs of their communities—the elderly, teen moms, poor schools, blighted neighborhoods—is essential to the life of the parish. Whether looking to build upon, or simply start, a concerted social ministry outreach, this guidebook poses all the questions (and provides direction and answers) to help your parish move forward. Worksheets offer ways to strategize for developing your parish social justice ministry efforts.

The Empowerment Process: Centering Social Ministry in the Life of the Christian Community by Susan R. Stolfa (Paulist Press, 1994)
An in-depth, step-by-step handbook for creating an active social ministry within any parish.

Communities of Salt and Light Parish Resource Manual by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB Publishing, 1994)
This Bishops' statement for pastors and parish leaders seeks to strengthen parish social ministry. The statement presents seven elements of the social mission of parishes as a framework for planning and assessing that ministry. This document and the accompanying discussion questions provide a helpful tool for examining the social mission of a parish. The statement may also be viewed online.

My Lord and My God: Engaging Catholics in Social Ministry by Jeffrey Odell Korgen (Paulist Press, 2007).
This book examines successful examples of social ministry, explains why they work, and explores what they teach us about why some Catholics get involved in social action and others do not.
